This morning we somehow couldn't get going. After our opulent breakfast, Schaahatz fell into a soup coma (which he had for breakfast), and I dozed off half-asleep. Yesterday was really exhausting, and besides, we are on vacation, so it’s fine to take it a bit easier for one day. The late start also threw our sightseeing plans into disarray.

A must for every tech nerd, manga, and anime fan: the Akihabara district.

I’m not one of them, Schaahatz is a bit like the first one, but we wanted to experience it too. Many young people dressed as their favorite character.

Of course, we are curious about what there is to discover in the department stores. Over 7 floors of electronic gadgets, games, but also household appliances, photos, mangas, Pokémon, and of course souvenirs.

July Manga Event

While we look around, we lose track of time, as we have tickets for the Tokyo Skytree at 18:00 - and haven’t eaten anything yet.

And so we rush towards the train. Almost at the station, Google indicates that the train is delayed (it happens in Japan too), but that’s no problem for us; we just take another train. Our steps quicken. Into the train and after 3 stops, we get off. Changing trains - where do we need to go??? We ask a bus driver - he points in the direction we came from, so back again, but our line isn’t indicated there. A bit puzzled, we wander around until we finally find the station. It's 18:00. At 6:10, we arrive at the Tokyo Skytree.

Facts:

The Skytree was opened on May 22, 2012. With a height of 634 meters, it is the tallest free-standing broadcasting tower in the world and the third tallest building in the world. The elevators travel at a speed of 600 meters per minute and reach the Tembo Deck in just 50 seconds. The foundation of the Skytree rests on seismic base isolators - massive, 1.4-meter-thick rubber cushions. These isolators allow the tower to bend safely during an earthquake since Tokyo is located on the Nankai Trough and experiences about 1500 earthquakes annually. There are two observation decks, one at a height of 350 meters. The highest platform is at 450 meters. An inclined, 110-meter-long glass corridor (
