With one foot in...

For those who missed yesterday's blog post, you should know: absolutely nothing worth mentioning happened. We tried to sleep in (but woke up at exactly 8 o'clock), had a lavish breakfast, and thanked the gray, cloudy sky for providing the perfect weather for our planned day off. But just lazing around all day isn't fun, so we drove to Schruns to do a bit of sightseeing. But it was very disappointing. Hotels, guesthouses, vacation rentals, and a shopping mall that is 50% a giant InterSport store. We walked around the town a bit, but we were not happy at all. At least we got some exercise.

After a quick trip to the grocery store, we were back at the Cabinski, wasting time. In the late afternoon, we took another short walk through the town and stopped by the neighboring farmer's place to get some fresh eggs. For dinner, we finally had potatoes and cottage cheese with freshly picked herbs from the raised beds.

That was the end of the day off. Or so we thought! In the evening, we sat in the living room and watched a movie when suddenly something sneaked around our seating area outside and tried to steal one of the cushions... a fox had actually found its way to us! But before we could even grab the camera, it was already darting back into the forest... what an excitement!

Today's plan was a trip to Liechtenstein, which we reached quite uneventfully after about 45 minutes. First, we arrived at the ruins of Schellenberg Castle and we were all alone, except for 2 men mowing the lawn. There is actually nothing interesting to see there, except for the old walls, but we enjoyed the fresh air, the view, and the increasingly better weather.

Next, we wanted to go to Vaduz, but our navigation system took us out of Liechtenstein, onto the Swiss highway, and back into Liechtenstein again. We parked the car and strolled through the pedestrian zone, which is also considered an art mile. Sculptures like the 'African King' or the 'Sleeping Woman' (No, I did not model for that!) and many oversized stamps glued to the ground lined the way. Past the government building, we continued to St. Florin Cathedral. As is our tradition on vacation, we visit 1 church and light 2 candles for our loved ones in heaven.

After that, we walked to the so-called 'Old Rhine Bridge', a long covered wooden bridge only open to pedestrians and cyclists, connecting Liechtenstein and Switzerland. The country border runs right in the middle of the bridge, so we stood with one foot in each of the two countries, with the Rhine underneath us. The highlight of the day!

Then we walked through the Vaduz residential area back to the city center, treated ourselves to a small late lunch overlooking the town hall, and soon it was time to head back to Montafon. We still had to refuel, but in Liechtenstein, with €2.39 per liter of diesel, it is absolutely unthinkable! We're not that well-off 😂
