Shreveport & Dallas

Published: 12.09.2019

After three party-filled nights in New Orleans, we set off in the morning for our next stop.

We made good progress on the multi-lane highways. We decided to take the approximately one hour longer route via Jackson, Mississippi. We had our lunch break at the fast food restaurant Taco Bell. The ladies at the counter were delighted to serve tourists and were accordingly friendly.

The drive was relaxed yet tiring as we were on the road for about six hours in total. Our Dodge Ram was thirsty, but with fuel prices of around 2 dollars per gallon (3.79 liters), this didn't really matter. We arrived in Shreveport in the early evening. Gambling is allowed in Louisiana, so some casinos settled along the Red River in Streveport in the mid-1990s. This revitalized the downtown area and the riverfront. We also decided to spend the night in one of the casinos. Gambling itself didn't mean much to us, we were more interested in the affordable overnight rates. In the evening, we visited a typical American steakhouse in the outlet shopping district. After that, we strolled through the streets before we tiredly returned to our suite at the hotel. The room easily made it into the top five of the best hotels of our world trip.

The following day, we headed straight to Dallas. At noon, we stopped at a typical smokehouse. There, large pieces of beef and pork are smoked and cooked at low temperatures for up to 18 hours. The meat was extremely tender and had a good smoky flavor. For just under 12 francs, you get more than enough here. With full stomachs, we continued our journey. We reached our lovely Airbnb in the early afternoon. Once again, we had the entire house to ourselves, at least for now. The house was located in an affluent neighborhood and we felt comfortable.

Originally, we planned to visit the famous Six Flags amusement park in the region. To our dismay, we found out that the park only opens on weekends. Our flight to Mexico is on Saturday... Well, there are worse things.

We spent two rather quiet days in Dallas. The city seemed modern, hip, and clean. As it was almost 40 degrees hot during the day, there were only a few people on the streets. We visited the sights, such as the place where former President John F. Kennedy was shot, the park, the Pioneer Plaza with its unique bronze longhorn cows, and the retro streetcar.

And so our America road trip comes to an end, and we look forward to the beach and the sea in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
