Koala Hospital and Nambucca Heads

Published: 17.11.2019

Just before Port Macquarie, there is a small town called Nambucca Heads. There are painted rocks along the coast, which may sound boring but is actually really beautiful. Anyone who wants to can leave a picture and immortalize themselves there.

In Port Macquarie, there is a Koala Hospital. The most common diseases among koalas are chlamydia (especially eye infections leading to blindness), attacks by predators (dog bites), koalas being hit by cars, and sadly, death by burns/dehydration. Koalas are unfortunately not very smart. That means if their habitat is on fire, they don't move away and don't colonize new areas.

😓😫

They also sleep for most of the day because eucalyptus, among other things, is very nutrient-poor and even toxic, and they need the energy for digestion. Therefore, they have a high liver capacity, which also makes it difficult to treat bacterial infections such as chlamydia, as many antibiotics are broken down by the liver. In the Koala Hospital, there were even koalas with kidney and liver problems because of this.

Some koalas have been admitted multiple times and are now permanent residents of the hospital.

When we were there: List of Koala patients. It should be mentioned that the bushfires really escalated after we left. There are definitely many more now. According to the media, half of the population in NSW has died.🔥
