In the last two days with Jil in Halifax, I arranged with the hostel that I can work as a volunteer in housekeeping for some time and stay in the hostel for free. This was a good opportunity to search for a long-term accommodation and a job in Halifax peacefully. The plan was to stay and work in Halifax until the end of the year.
Every day from 10 am to 2 pm (with breaks :D), I cleaned the hostel and made beds with Kyle, the permanent housekeeper, and 1-3 other volunteers. It was a relaxed job, together with nice people.
Ultimately, I stayed in the hostel for about 3 weeks, where a small group of people formed who stayed in the hostel for a longer period. Either because they were also looking for an apartment, worked nearby and didn't want to search for a room for such a short time, or they were waiting to move into their new apartment. It was a diverse group of people from different countries, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, Brazil, Austria... We often had movie nights or sat in the kitchen with beer and wine. It was a great time, you quickly felt at home, so much so that every time someone left, we joked: 'He/She escaped the vortex!' It was too easy to settle in there and stay forever :D
My search for a room in Halifax wasn't really successful; cheap, furnished, month to month and centrally located was a rare combination.
After some time, I decided to move on, travel westwards and look for jobs in ski resorts, which I actually didn't want to do because I thought it was too cliché :D
I then picked Jasper, near Banff and the other tourist and work and travel hotspots, but not right in the middle of it. From Halifax, I searched online for housekeeping jobs with staff accommodation and applied. My plan B was to go to Calgary if I didn't find anything in Jasper.
During my time in the hostel, I had the opportunity to go to Peggy's Cove again with two other people, it was beautiful again with bright blue sky.
Before I actually left, I finally made it to Point Pleasant Park, which was recommended to me almost every day, mainly because there are so many happy dogs running around, and they were all right, it's a great green area in Halifax and SO MANY HAPPY DOGS!!!
