Swayambhunath - Buddhism and Hinduism united

After first visiting the Hindu temple complex Pashupatinath and then the Buddhist Boudhanath Stupa, we wanted to take a look at Swayambhunath. This is a primarily Buddhist complex, although Hindu elements were also incorporated. For example, there is also a Hindu temple on the site. This is the only Hindu temple to have Buddhist prayer wheels attached to the outer walls.

As soon as you climb the approximately 300 steps to the temple complex, it becomes clear that Buddhism and Hinduism go hand in hand here. There are both Buddha statues and statues of Hindu gods on the steps. In general, I find the coexistence of these two religions here in Nepal to be very respectful.

Swayambhunath is also colloquially called the monkey temple because a population of rhesus monkeys have found their home there. It is noticeable that monkeys, pigeons and other animals are increasingly gathering in places where sacrifices are made. It was once explained to me that it is believed that the gods can receive the offerings through these animals.
