Saturday 14th July.
The breakfast room is narrow, dirty, and noisy, so I grab a dry slice of toast and two cups of tea and retreat to my room to escape this environment. At 10:00, I try calling my family in Florida again, but they are probably at the beach since it's 2:00 there. So I lug my luggage down to the reception and after a short shuttle ride, I'm dropped off at the airport at 10:30. Once again, the exit is at the very beginning of the airport, and everyone flying with LH has to walk through the entire terminal. So I have the red bag (without wheels but weighing around 14-15 kilos) over my shoulder, the backpack as carry-on on my back, and I'm pulling the rolling suitcase with its 23kg. This goes on for about 20 meters at a time until the red bag slips off my shoulder. By the time I reach LH, I'm drenched in sweat and have back pain.
Check-in, pay $70 for the second bag (next year it will be $150), and then after another 30 minutes of waiting, I clear security. I spend the time before departure in a wooden rocking chair, which looks like it was built by the Shakers at some point.
The flight back is smooth, I can't sleep anyway, but the sunrise over Frankfurt is beautiful.
Sunday 15th July.
We arrive on time in Frankfurt, and after a month in the nature of the far northwest of the USA and western Canada, I'm back in Germany, and an exciting phase of my work life awaits me in the coming months.
