Kosovo- Peja or Pec

Ishicilelwe: 04.11.2017

In Peja we only spent one night on our way through Kosovo. As various articles and our travel guide to Kosovo advise against leaving the official roads in Kosovo, we avoided searching for hidden parking lots or country lanes this time. The danger of stumbling upon old war mines is still too great... So we looked for a hotel in Peja. There were some, but they were quite expensive, especially in the city center: 50 euros for one night, which exceeded our travel budget. Therefore, we drove to the train station and found an unpleasant hotel room in a smoking hotel for 20 euros per night, right by the road. There was also a small dead puppy lying on the street in front of the hotel, which I felt sorry for, and we wanted to bury it the next morning (but it was already gone by then...). On this evening, I had actually had enough of the trip. The noise, the many smells of the city (car exhaust, plastic waste, street food), in the hotel (cigarettes!), the dead puppy, and also the poverty that we had been seeing for weeks, weighed heavily on me (and also on my stomach...) and made me realize how lucky and unfair it is that we are simply born into our prosperity. During the weeks in Macedonia, Albania, and Kosovo, my thoughts revolved a lot around luxury and living standards...

The next day, Floh went off to search for our obligatory car sticker with the coat of arms or flag of the country, postcards, and breakfast, and also explored the city a bit, while I worked on my master's thesis in our cozy hotel room (haha).

Later, Floh told me that he had a very nice and interesting encounter with an elderly gentleman who had lived and worked in Austria and Germany for a long time and recognized Floh's language problems when ordering at the bakery and helped him out. (Very few people here speak English...) Later, the two of them went to look for the post office and the man told Floh a lot about the Kosovo War, the conflict with the Serbs, life in Germany, etc... He even invited Floh for a coffee and gave him his phone number in case we ever return to Kosovo.
