Perhaps not the capital of Ireland, but the cultural center of the Emerald Isle. I ended up in Galway three times during my time in Ireland: as a day trip with Laura and Cecile to visit Lucia, then alone as a hub for birthday trips, and finally, together with Waqas, to visit Lucia again for 2 days.
Galway has a lot to offer: a wonderful cathedral, countless pubs with live music, and the sea right on the doorstep. The local pubs here serve their own beers, some brewed with milk or very creamy beer. The young people spent their free time at the Spanish Arch, while being watched by seagulls and other birds and having their food stolen.
Galway's old town invites you to stroll around, the so-called Latin Quarter. Decorated with countless Irish flags and the old cobblestone pavement, street musicians here try to earn a little money with their performed songs.
We also tried out some great restaurants, for example a Mexican burrito shop that made us such spicy burritos that even Waqas, who is used to spicy food from Pakistan, couldn't finish them.
Galway was also the starting point for my 2 trips just for myself. I booked a small Airbnb for the beginning of June and drove the dream routes through the rugged north, but more on that in the next section...
