While you can see the Makaken monkeys living on Bali in one of the 'official' Monkey Forests, these specimens are particularly cheeky and simply help themselves to the tourists' pockets to get to the food they brought with them.
However, the monkeys are scattered across the island and with some luck you can experience them up close on the way to the nearby lake, for example, by the roadside.
As large quantities of offerings are often brought to Balinese festivals, including fruit, which the families cannot possibly eat and consume afterwards, they often like to feed them to the monkeys. The monkeys already know about this and wait by the roadside for the easily found food when the opportunity arises.
