Baia Mare is the capital of the Maramureș region in northwest Romania. It has around 124,000 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is surrounded by a mountain range. The Săsar River also flows through the city. There are numerous bars, restaurants, museums, and galleries as well as a university. The center is formed by the historic city center, which is surrounded by residential blocks. Until the end of the last century, Baia Mare was a mining town and had to deal with serious environmental damage such as acid rain and polluted water. However, nature has since recovered, so you can swim in the numerous lakes outside the city without any problems.
