November 28, 2021: Aix-en-Provence
In the morning, we woke up to ice on the inside of our windows. The condensation had frozen. We also had ice on the outside of our windows and didn't even have an ice scraper with us. So we had to wait until the sun melted the ice. With these first little signs of winter, right on time for the 1st Advent, we headed into the city. There was a relaxed, cheerful atmosphere over Aix-en-Provence, families strolled through the city in the sun, and many shops used this 1st Advent Sunday to decorate their facades or shop windows for Christmas. We had heard that there was a market today and followed the crowd through the city, but it didn't lead us to a conventional market, but rather to a Christmas market. Many white wooden huts were set up on one side of a wide, long, car-free street. On the other side, a brass band was setting up. Similar things were sold in the stalls as in Germany: jewelry, soap, lavender products, knitted goods, and much more. At the beginning and end, there were quite a few children's carousels and of course, the candy stands were not to be missed. Unfortunately, there were no Schmalzkuchen. On the other side of the many carousels, we discovered a small Christmas market where only crib figurines were sold, which apparently are still hand-painted and were very popular. So we strolled through this cold, sunny city and actually felt the pre-Christmas atmosphere.
