Wow, we're in a city. Even with only around 47,000 inhabitants, Nelson feels like a big city to us. Since Christchurch, we haven't seen a proper city. But it's so peaceful and the people are so friendly, just like typical for the South Island of New Zealand. The locals you see here are either jogging and cycling or ready for a quick small talk.
We start our sightseeing day at the 'Centre of New Zealand' viewpoint, which is reached by a steep footpath.
The highlights of the city for us are The Ringmaker Jens Hansen (the maker of the Lord of the Rings rings) and the little side street with the historic houses. Really pretty. Once again, we catch ourselves admiring the beautiful houses on the hillside and wondering what it would be like to live here.
In the evening, we drive to a small campground at Moetapu Bay and luckily get one of the six pitches. A peaceful little spot right by the water.
