Rouen - in the footsteps of Joan of Arc

Today we took the train from Gaillon-Aubevoye to Rouen, the capital of Normandy.

On our city tour, we saw various places associated with Saint Joan of Arc.

After her capture by the English and a trial, she was ultimately burned in Rouen.

Despite the destruction from World War II, in which Rouen was bombed by the Allies, much of the old town is still preserved.

Many old half-timbered houses line the streets, giving the city a colorful face. 

The Gothic-style façade of the Abbey Church of St. Ouen dates back to the 19th century and has just been freshly renovated. 

Given the size of the church, one might think they are already in front of the cathedral, which is located a bit further in the city center.

The façade of the cathedral is adorned with numerous figures, and the interior is also impressive in scale. 

Our walk also took us to the Seine, which can be crossed over several bridges.

Here, after her execution, the burned remains of Joan of Arc were scattered, so that no relics could remain.

Throughout the city, one can find monuments and signs related to the saint.

There is also a church named after her, which is quite unique in its design. 

It was built in 1979 in the Old Market, where Joan of Arc met her fiery death.

Of course, we also made a photo stop at the city's most photographed motif: the Gros Horloge.

We took the train back and from the station drove by car to Les Andelys.

After a coffee break, we set off for a walk through the town, which lies right on the Seine.

Walking along the beautifully landscaped promenade by the river, we enjoyed the scenery. 

There was also a river cruise ship docked, whose guests we saw shortly after in the local café.
