We drove from Auckland to Waitomo, a tiny village with about 60 residents. The town thrives on tourism, as it is home to the famous Waitomo Caves. Perhaps the most famous is the Glowworm Cave. In the high season, around 1500-2000 tourists visit this cave daily. The special feature, as the name suggests, is the glowworms that inhabit the cave. We also ventured into a cave: although we did not visit the Glowworm Cave, as it is often overcrowded, we chose a private cave where just as many glowworms illuminated the space. We traveled through the cave on a boat along a river. Above the river, there were thousands of glowworms, illuminating the otherwise completely dark cave. The longer we stayed in the darkness, the more glowworms we perceived. It looked like the Milky Way. Truly impressive! Afterwards, we visited another cave, but it didn't have any glowworms, so it was less exciting. Overall, it was a fantastic experience that I will definitely not forget easily. It's difficult to put this experience into words, as it is something that you need to see with your own eyes. Nonetheless, I hope that you can somewhat imagine what it looked like.
However, I believe that this experience can still be surpassed here in New Zealand! ;)
See you soon :)
