In the morning we visit the Valley of the Sugar Mills and in the afternoon we relax on the beach, that's the plan.
Just a few kilometers from Trinidad, there is a valley where sugarcane was grown many years ago. Columbus brought the plant from the Canary Islands, the first sugarcane plantation was established in 1603, and by 1850 Cuba became the world's largest sugar producer. Today, the country ranks 10th in sugar production. The history of the continental blockade before 1806 and the efforts of Europeans to extract sugar from sugar beets is fascinating. Since then, there has been a constant struggle for sugar and the Europeans seem to have won so far, but at what cost. Please read more if you are interested. It is a very exciting story.
The village of the sugar mills advertises with an observation tower and a mansion. Around it, the hardworking women wait for customers, promoting wonderful tablecloths, runners, dresses, blouses, shirts, and bags. A train leaves for nowhere and everyone tries to get a CUC, at the parking lot, at the tower, at the sugarcane stand. It costs a little more at the latter, with rum. Be that as it may, we see a beautiful landscape and villages that are increasingly falling into disrepair. Very sad. We retreat to our resort. All-inclusive is great. The massage is extra and for only 15 USD an hour, it's a bargain. This masseur is also doing his best.
One more hour at the beach and then dinner. We are invited to the international menu, with salad, soup, main course, and dessert, all included, except for the Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, that is extra. But what can you do.
We are full and satisfied.
