(The Slope Point, The Catlins, Dunedin, Moeraki Boulders)
If we were already at the northernmost point of New Zealand (Cape Reinga) on the North Island, we naturally had to go to the southernmost point of New Zealand (Slope Point) on the South Island. Done. Both points are very different, but both are beautiful in their own way - as it should be in New Zealand. Here we also got our herd of sheep on a wide pasture for a nice photo - very typical of New Zealand.
After that, we continued to the Catlins. A landscape area in the south of the South Island, where there is a lot to see. We visited beautiful beaches, the Cathedral Cave, and the Mirror Lake, among other things.
After the Catlins, we went to the next beautiful corner - to the east - to Dunedin. Before that, we made a stop at the Moeraki Boulders. The Moeraki Boulders are a number of unusually large spherical concretions on Koekohe Beach on the coast of Otago on the South Island of New Zealand between Moeraki and Hampden. The gray-colored septaria are individually or in groups on the coast.
On the way to Dunedin, we also stopped by Nugget Point with its lighthouse. Here rocks called 'The Nuggets' protrude from the water.
In Dunedin, we were greeted in our next Airbnb not by a person, but by animals. So typical of New Zealand ;-)
Dunedin is a small beautiful town that I liked from the very beginning. The surrounding area, which we had in the limited time available, confirmed this. For me, Dunedin & surroundings are one of the most beautiful spots in New Zealand. The area is also known for its penguins, which we unfortunately waited for in vain on the beach. But here I found my favorite beach (Sandfly Bay).
In Dunedin, we also happened to pass by the steepest street in the world (if you know the city, you don't wonder further), climbed the Organpipes for a good view from above, and went to Tunnel Beach, which impressed all of us. Here you can only reach the beach through a built tunnel. The background story in brief: A king used to want an exclusive beach for his daughter. That's why he built this private access.
