After many days and partly sleepless nights at high altitude, we continued towards the coast and finally back to sea level and warm weather. After another sleepless night on the bus (this time not only due to the altitude, but also because of our snoring neighbor), we arrived in Huacachina, a small oasis in the middle of the desert. Here, it really looks like what you imagine a desert oasis to be: some houses with hostels and restaurants gather around a small lake, and beyond that, there is nothing but sand. Therefore, there are not too many activities here. The highlight for everyone (and also the reason why we wanted to come here) are sand buggy and sandboarding tours through the desert. So, we spent the only planned full day here sunbathing and relaxing by the pool in the morning, and in the late afternoon, we went on the buggy tour. We were driven through the desert in a small group, and there was even a bit of rollercoaster feeling while speeding over the dunes. In between, there were short stops where we could slide down the dunes on a snowboard on our bellies or simply enjoy the beautiful views of the slowly setting sun.
After this fun excursion, we planned our further journey and our next two nights at a nearby winery during dinner. However, we had no idea that from now on, events would unfold rapidly and our plans would completely change. But more about that next time...
