Restless times in Nicaragua

After a long back and forth, research on the internet and conversations with other travelers, we decided to go to Nicaragua despite the current unrest. So at 9:00, we got on a shuttle in El Tunco, El Salvador, and after 'short' 11 hours, we arrived in Léon, Nicaragua. The long journey even rewarded us with a short stay and a stamp in our passport from Honduras (Bucketlist ! :D)

In Léon itself, we quickly noticed the extent of the protests, which are initiated and led by the students, demanding the resignation of the long-time president. The city was still marked by smaller gatherings of protesters late at night, and we rarely saw tourists during our two days there.

So we followed two newfound friends from Germany to Granada, to a hotel that actually exceeded our travel budget, but due to the lack of tourism, it was too beautiful and cheap to not stay there for three days.

So we enjoyed a few days in the huge hotel that we had all to ourselves, had a great time with our friends...

...and went on a day trip to the crater lake....

We rented a moped and were not spared from the fortunately mostly peaceful roadblocks there....

...and explored the island.

Now we are in San Juan del Sur at Hostel Clandestino (thanks to Babsi and Stefan for the tip :)) and once again looking for the perfect wave. :D

So despite the tense situation, we had an exceptionally beautiful time in Nicaragua. However, we would only recommend the trip to travelers with enough time and flexibility in the current situation. We really hope that the situation in this beautiful country will soon calm down for the better.
