Sligo - the magical North - 6 months in Ireland

פֿאַרעפֿנטלעכט: 08.05.2023

So there I was: On my way to my first dream destination. Rented a car and off I went. 140 kilometers and 2 hours later, I arrived in Sligo, where the magical North was supposed to begin. Here in the North, the Benbulbin, a kind of Irish table mountain, towers over the sea and is so distinctive in the landscape that you can see it from everywhere.

For example, from Streedagh Beach you can see it towering in the background. I spent lonely moments with my drone on this kilometer-long sandy beach, filming the waves from over 200 meters high and spotted a reason to come back to Ireland on the other side of the huge bay: the majestic Slieve League cliffs, which plunge up to 650 meters deep. Unfortunately, I didn't have time for this trip, so I decided to visit Classiebawn Castle next and was disappointed for the first time. I discovered the castle on Instagram, but unfortunately it is privately owned, so it could only be viewed from a distance.

My next stop was supposed to be the most magical place in Ireland: Gleniff Horseshoe. A mountain range in the green, with a small ruin at the foot of the mountain.

In clear weather, you can see a cave at the top of the rock, but that was not possible for today. The clouds hung so low at this place that only half of the mountains could be seen, the rest was shrouded in white. And then, out of nowhere, there was an amusing encounter: a person came down from the clouds to me, I could hardly believe my eyes! And he came cursing directly towards me, loudly complaining about this fucking weather and everything was simply shitty for him overall. Patrick came all the way from Dublin and reminded me of a Marine from US movies. Patrick was a strong, tall man with a bald head and blue eyes. I had heard before that people from Dublin were a little rougher. Here I had my living proof.

After a short chat, I set off for the final destination, the legendary Benbulbin, and went for a hike at the foot of the mountain. The clouds moved along the mountain and the sheep grazed peacefully in the hilly landscape. From here you can see the endless ocean and just be by yourself. I needed that for myself and simply enjoyed it!

Then it was back to Galway, quickly got something at Apache Pizza and went to bed. Because tomorrow the next adventure begins. We go to lonely beaches, fabulous castles, and the hilly landscape of Ireland.
