I'm speeding, I'm speeding

Ipapashiwe: 04.06.2019

Short addition from the day before yesterday: we started in Rockhampton at 8 in the morning to head to Airlie Beach. We had about 550km ahead of us. Barely started driving, something hit the roof. Ohhh shit. Forgot to pack the flip flops again. This time we could still save them 😂 We made a short stop at the Capricorn Caves. A one-hour tour showed us the cave system, which was different from most as it was aboveground. Super impressive! 500km and 6 hours of driving later, we finally arrived. We had arranged to meet the German couple at the campsite in the evening. Only when it got really cold (10:30pm) did we go to bed. We're becoming night owls 🦉 Yesterday morning, the day started at 5:30am again. A tour to the Whitsundays was on the agenda. The day before, I bought motion sickness pills just in case. When I saw that we weren't going on a sailboat or catamaran, but on a speedboat, I could breathe a sigh of relief. Then our guide said, 'Well, you can feel the wind. That means the waves will be high.' Great, that could only go wrong 😅 After the welcome, we all squeezed into wetsuits and jumped onto the boat. As expected, the waves were really high. Buuut... nobody got sick. After an hour, we arrived at Whitehaven Beach and everyone was soaking wet and freezing. That didn't really change for the rest of the day. But the beach was incredibly beautiful. 89% pure sand, crystal-clear water, and lots of little fish. Definitely one of the highlights. Just in time for lunch, we were visited by a monitor lizard, who was also hungry of course. Then we continued to a snorkeling spot not far from Whitehaven. Put on the diving mask, put on the flippers, and into the water. Brrrr!!! So cold. But underwater, the view was breathtaking. A huge coral reef with thousands of small colorful fish. Incredible! It didn't take long until we spotted a turtle. You have to experience that with your own eyes! Super fascinating. Back on the boat, the shivering began. Thank goodness we packed way too many warm clothes, so we all put them on. Wrapped up to the top, we continued to Palm Beach Resort, where everyone enjoyed a thawing cocktail in the sun. On the way there, we actually managed to fall asleep. The waves were not as high anymore and rocked us gently into a little nap. After the cocktail, we headed back to Airlie Beach where a nice warm shower was waiting for us. And then... as it always happens: my hairdryer stopped working. That's a cold waiting for me. In the evening, we met another Aussie couple who gave us some travel tips and a bottle of white wine. The people here are way too nice!
