Mundaka - 29th October

Ipapashiwe: 03.11.2019

Just before Mundaka, we find a small campsite that has been around since the 60s. There are pictures of the past where tents were placed close together with no trees or bushes in sight. That looks different today...To reach the pitch, you have to go downhill at an estimated 90 degrees...impressive! Many caravans wouldn't have a chance here. But for the bus, it's no problem! We enjoy the evening sun, then cook noodles with sauce after a long time and stuff ourselves...after that, not much else happens and we go to bed early - almost as usual!

The next day, after breakfast, we head to the little village. It's low tide and the beach, which runs into a bay, feels like kilometers long. Here, in theory, Europe's longest wave breaks, measuring about 400 meters. But unfortunately, a shipyard worked on the harbor entrance about ten years ago and dredged thousands of tons of sand, which resulted in the wave being completely destroyed and almost an entire village...because the major surf contests are now missing and so is the tourism, which supported almost an entire village...What a shame! However, the situation is recovering and the diva is slowly coming back. Unfortunately, we don't notice anything about it, the wave is about 50 cm high on this day...! We walk through the village and stop for a beer in the sun at noon on the church square. Young and old gather here. The children have a break and flock out of the school to the public village square, playing soccer and tag. A nice hustle and bustle...I wonder why our schoolyards are always fenced in...?!

On the way back, we want to buy water and coffee, but everything is closed for siesta and the doors are locked! We stroll back to the campsite, I take an afternoon nap, and Jörni holds the fort in front of the bus.

In the early evening, we make our way back to the illuminated town, where it's more lively again. The supermarkets in these villages are about 50 square meters in size, just like the good old-fashioned grocery stores of the past, but you can get everything you need! We do some more shopping and make a short visit to the local surf shop, then we go back again. The humidity is so high that we regret wearing long pants...it's so hot...lovely! We sit in front of the bus for a while, then it starts to drizzle and we get ready for bed! Good night Mundaka, it was great!
