Day 3: Saturday August 4, 2018 Liverpool

Ipapashiwe: 04.08.2018

As it turned out, our overnight spot was on a busy road. However, we slept well and weren't woken up by any angry farmers (wild camping is actually prohibited in England). Before falling asleep, we were able to admire the beautiful starry sky. We woke up around 7:00 am and shortly after, we headed towards Liverpool. After about half the distance and countless roundabouts, we switched drivers and took a break. Rest stops were few and far between on our route, but when one did appear, it had everything (e.g. at one rest area: gas station, supermarket, café, restaurant, Burger King, Subway, McDonalds, Costa,...). By the way, the mentioned roundabouts have nothing to do with the ones in Germany. The so-called roundabouts are of course in left-hand traffic. They are often 3 or 4 lanes wide, with traffic lights, numerous exits (including highway exits and entrances), and sometimes even half settlements in the middle.

When we arrived in Liverpool, we first went to our pre-booked hostel. We were able to check in immediately. From the outside, the building doesn't look like a hostel. Inside, two employees awaited us, who showed us the entire house. These presumed Mexicans spoke English almost worse than us J. We got probably the only double room on the top floor. The shared toilet and shared bathroom are one floor below. The cleanliness is one that you'd rather not look too closely at, but presumably still acceptable (as I said, we didn't look closely). You can prepare breakfast yourself in the morning. You can use anything you find in the kitchen for that purpose.

After settling into our room, we started our exploration tour. For this, we took a map of all the sights with us from the hostel. Then we explored the city on foot. This way, we were able to see most of the sights. In addition, there was free beer in the city center. This was a promotion for craft beer (taste is debatable). Our tour took us, among other things, to various cathedrals, the Liverpool FC shop, a fairground, the Albert Dock, the port itself, and many shops in the city center. At the Liverpool docks, we enjoyed the sun and a portion of fish and chips (known as fish sticks with fries among connoisseurs) - delicious! Tour length about 18,000 steps = 13 km.

We will now spend the evening at the hostel, enjoying beer and cider in the common room/terrace.

Cheers!

Mileage: 1440 km

Lesson of the day: Whether it's free beer, four beers, or pills - you never walk alone!
