Isla Holbox - Relaxing on the beach and hostel life in the 10-bed dorm

Ipapashiwe: 26.12.2018

Our last stop of the Mexico trip was Isla Holbox, a small island about 200km north of Cancun. Here we wanted to just relax and do nothing for the last four days. After detours - we missed the bus to Chiquila, the mainland from where the ferry to Holbox was leaving, which was annoying because we had already booked and paid for the bus ticket online. And it was the only bus to Chiquila that day. So we booked a new ticket to Cancun. After about 4 hours of driving, we wanted to take a bus to Chiquila there, but they told us that no more buses were going to Chiquila today. Again, no one spoke English and so we couldn't properly ask with our broken Spanish what other options were available. After all, there are also collectivos. Exhausted and hungry, we tried to research on our smartphones and succeeded. Just 180m from the bus station, there was a shuttle bus station. After we had strengthened ourselves with omelettes and mango shakes in a Colombian restaurant, we took the shuttle for 250 pesos per person to Chiquila. After about 2 and a half hours of driving, we arrived there. It was already dark. We bought a ticket for the ferry (150 pesos = about 7.50 euros). After half an hour on the ferry, we finally arrived on Holbox. After a 20-minute walk, we reached our hostel, the Tribu Hostel, and for the first time since our trip, we stayed in a shared room - a 10-bed dorm. Since we were hungry, we set off and went in search of a restaurant. There were plenty here. Everything was very touristy, including the prices. There were no real streets, the paths there were rather muddy and partly flooded with water. There were no cars driving here. Only golf carts. We settled down at the Hot Corner and after fish & chips and beer (Sol) and tequila with live music, we had a nice first evening on the Isla.

The next few days were rather lazy with beach, food, sleeping in, chilling in the hammocks, exploring the island by bike, and chatting and drinking at the hostel bar with other travelers in the evening. Many travelers from Germany were with us. It was really crazy, half of our dorm was from Germany. After Elena left on the 22nd of December and made her way back to Germany, I stayed one more night on Holbox and on the 23rd of December, I made my way to Cancun to fly to Lima (Peru) via Mexico City on the 24th of December at 3:15am
