Full sun and pleasant temperatures - that's how Île de Ré welcomed us and we immediately felt comfortable. We spent our two days here cycling on good bike paths - once across the island and then to La Rochelle.
On the island, you pass by a lot of salt pans made of clay. You can buy the Fleur de Sel on every corner - we also did that at one corner. Otherwise, the small villages on the island are very charming; small, white houses hidden and protected behind walls, attached to narrow streets that you better not drive with a motorhome. Everything looks so clean - a watercolor painting of all shades of blue, pine green, tile red, and sun yellow. If I were a painter, I would linger here. But since I'm not, we will continue towards Bordeaux tomorrow. I am definitely a wine drinker.
You can reach La Rochelle via a long bridge, a beautiful small town ... like Vannes and Poitiers and ... and ... and ... France has many of these beautiful small towns perfect for strolling! One thing you can't have in France, though: hunger at 4 pm :-O We've been here for so long, but we still haven't gotten used to the fact that there's only sweets between 3 pm and 7 pm.
