Today we continue our journey north to Honningsvag, the starting point for the Nordkapp. Today, unfortunately, the road is closed due to strong winds and snowstorms. So our trip takes us to the small fishing village of Sarnesveien, just outside Honningsvag. Here we will learn about king crabs and have the opportunity to try them. The red king crab, introduced by Russian scientists in the Barents Sea, is now an important part of the fishing culture in northern Norway. The king crab, native to the Pacific, was introduced to the Murmansk Fjord near the Norwegian-Russian border in the 1960s. It quickly spread along the coast of Finnmark in Norway, despite early Norwegian efforts to stop its spread due to concerns about its impact on marine flora and fauna. Today, the red king crab is considered a delicacy and an essential part of the local fishing culture. Fresh from the cold and black Barents Sea, it is flown directly to the gourmet restaurants of the continent, where it is sold at prices comparable to the most exclusive steaks.
