We left HCMC or Saigon behind and took a flight for a few days of break on the island of Phu Quoc, located off the coast of mainland Vietnam. After just one hour flight, we landed in a newly built but very small airport. We will spend the next four days in a small resort on the west side of the island. It is the largest island in Vietnam and is located in the Gulf of Thailand. Phu Quoc promises its visitors white beaches, palm trees straight out of a catalog, and tranquility.
Tourism has only recently boomed here. But it is booming intensely. Construction is going on as if there is no tomorrow. Everywhere on the drive between the airport and the hotel, there are construction sites, construction plans, and construction workers working to beautify the island for mass tourism.
Our resort provides us with a room that is only about 50 meters away from the beach. Quietness, white sand, and palm trees are also as promised. The weather is also on our side as always. The sun is scorching down on us at 32 degrees.
Therefore, there won't be any big adventures to announce in the next few days (unless we have accidents on the beach). We will also leave the camera at home while we take turns splashing in the pool and the sea, so this time we will only upload a few cell phone photos.
In the evening, we start with bicycles from the hotel to the small restaurants in the village outside of our accommodation and enjoy freshly grilled food in a summer atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the holiday idyll is not all there is to see on Phu Quoc. Before we arrived, we unfortunately passed by kilometers of stretches of land where garbage and old plastic bags were stacked. We have heard that the sea and the beach are in a similarly disastrous state, but the resorts always ensure that their little section stays clean. This way, the paying guest is served the perfect world. The garbage is then burned in a big pile of waste, as seen here frequently, and the air is filled with smoke.
If you are just looking for peace and relaxation, Phu Quoc is a great destination and we are enjoying the surroundings very much. But soon we will move on and are already looking forward to Cambodia!
