After a little detour to Tatamagouche, we finally went to Cape Breton, a peninsula in the north of Nova Scotia. The famous Cabot Trail leads once around the island, a long coastal road with a magnificent view.
We spent the first night in Margaree Forks on Cape Breton, in a motel run by another German immigrant. It is located directly on the Cabot Trail, so we could start the tour the next morning. We drove the Cabot Trail clockwise, so on the first day we hiked the Skyline Trail, probably the most popular hiking trail on Cape Breton.
As expected, the path to the lookout platforms was quite crowded. But this is really justified because the view at the end is simply fantastic. The weather was absolutely great, the boundary between the blue sky and the blue ocean on the horizon was completely blurred. Since we did not hike back like most people on the easy and well-developed path, but continued on the longer loop, we mostly had the trail to ourselves on the way back.
