Maastricht

The Limburgian capital and university city with a Burgundian past in the southernmost part of the Netherlands impresses with a unique mix of historical sights and cultural highlights. Although Maastricht is the oldest city in the Netherlands, it has a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere thanks to its many students, cozy cafes, and trendy bars.

In the cobbled old town, you'll find the Gothic St. John's Church (Sint Janskerk) and the Romanesque St. Servatius Basilica with its significant collection of sacred art (which we, of course, visited).

On the banks of the river Meuse, which flows through the city center, stands the futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of fine arts. But at first glance, the futuristic pedestrian bridge Hoge Brug and the Sint-Servaasbrug, a beautiful stone bridge from the 13th century, shape the cityscape.

The city center of Maastricht can be reached from Camping t' Geuldal, where we have been stationed since Wednesday, in a leisurely three-quarters of an hour by bicycle. We first got an overview and will then visit selected destinations in a second attempt.
