Our 'return journey' through the Kimberley Region

After the beautiful and rather relaxing days on the Dampier Peninsula, we returned to the east after another stop at Cable Beach in Broome. We have to return the car in Darwin, so we are basically driving a big circle through the Kimberley Region.

For the first few hundred kilometers, we decided to drive on the Gibb River Road again. The Windjana Gorge, which we haven't visited yet, is located at the western end of the off-road track, and we still want to visit it. So, we drove in from the west again and checked out the gorge including the last remaining water pools. There are plenty of freshwater crocodiles here, which you can observe relatively close. Later, we stayed overnight at the Windjana Gorge campground. The next morning, we also visited the neighboring Tunnel Creek National Park and walked around there before we exited the Gibb River Road to the south and drove to Fitzroy Crossing.

We spent a relaxing afternoon at a large campground with a pool and a bunch of wallabies and black cockatoos. We continued on the highway until we reached Purnululu National Park, where you can see the so-called Bungle Bungles. These are special sandstone formations that have been formed over thousands of years. We spent a night at the campground and visited the highlights Echidna Chasm and Cathedral Gorge before leaving the national park again. It was very beautiful, but the flies were driving us crazy!

Since we still have a few days until we have to return the car in Darwin, we are taking a small detour again. We heard from some Swiss people that Emma Gorge at the beginning of the Gibb River Road is very beautiful. But we had skipped it, so now we are driving on the road for the third time – this time from the east – and camping at El Questo Station (which we didn't do the first time) and visiting the really beautiful Emma Gorge the next morning. A very worthwhile decision – because there was live music and burger night at El Questro Station on this Saturday, and they even had gluten-free buns! It was absolutely amazing, and after almost three weeks of cooking for ourselves and eating leftovers for lunch, we indulged ourselves.

But now we are definitely done with the Gibb River Road – after visiting Emma Gorge, we drove via Kununurra to Lake Argyle, where we are spending three nights at a modern campground. There is free Wi-Fi here (it's been a while), and we are catching up on our photo album and video work. Plus, there is a beautiful infinity pool, and you can rent kayaks and paddle around the huge lake. It's all very relaxing :)
