On June 2nd, we drove south to visit two beautiful and well-known beaches.
We drove about 1.5 hours south on Highway No. 11 and passed the Volcano National Park on our way, which we will visit during our stay on the big island.
1st Stop: Blacksand Beach
Our first stop was at Blacksand Beach, and as the name suggests, it has a pitch-black sandy beach. As the pictures prove, the sand is really black! :-)
2nd Stop: Greensand Beach
Here too, the pictures prove that the sand is actually green. However, the path to this beach/bay was not the leisurely walk we expected. We had to walk for an hour against extreme headwind from the parking lot to the bay. Finally, when we arrived, we couldn't even enjoy our sandwich and a sip of water because the wind was so strong that we swallowed more sand than sandwich. Well...click click and the pictures were in the bag. Uh well... the worst part was now having to walk the whole way back again! We fought against the wind and dragged ourselves towards the car! Our nerves were frayed, and we were looking forward to taking a shower! :P
The next day, we will take some time to relax and spend the day in the city of Hilo.
