We went to the airport early this morning and picked up our rental car. As always, we chose the smallest category and got some random cannonball (image). I had trouble because it didn't have a manual transmission or self-driving capabilities, but most importantly, it couldn't regenerate power. Along the way, Maria asked what the strange noises were. However, the rental process itself went smoothly.
Then, we drove to Volcano National Park and observed how the volcanoes and landscapes have changed. Seeing the flowing lava spout out in various places was impressive, of course. One road can no longer be driven on, so you have to walk a few kilometers to a viewpoint.
After visiting Volcano National Park, we visited two pretty waterfalls near Hilo.
The weather was typical for Big Island, alternating between sunshine, wind, and heavy rain every half hour. The rain was sometimes so heavy that the road was completely flooded.
