Arriving in Cusco, I immediately got to know a Colombian, a Spaniard, and a girl from Costa Rica at the hostel. We instantly hit it off and spent the next week together in Cusco. The city itself is beautiful, with lots to do and discover.
The day trip to Rainbow Mountain was sensational. The 2-hour hike from 4,000 to 5,000 meters was exhausting and we really felt the altitude. The thin air drained us of our last energy, but when we reached the top, it was well worth it:
We also booked the 2-day trip to Machu Picchu together. Since the beginning of my journey, I had been looking forward to visiting the Inca City, and it was even more impressive than expected.
Early in the morning, we were picked up by the tour bus and taken to the start of the train line. As budget backpackers, we decided to hike and walked along the train tracks for about 3 hours until we reached the small village of Aguas Calientes.
After an overnight stay, the next morning we faced the steep stairs leading up to Machu Picchu. For about 1.5 hours, we fought our way up step by step. It was during this climb that we experienced firsthand why the lost city was discovered so late.
Upon arrival at the entrance, our guide was already waiting for us, who would take us through the site. A few more steps up and there it was, Machu Picchu below us. Surrounded by mountains, hidden in the valley - the view was incredible! Words cannot describe this sight and this moment.
