Welcome to Central America
After a flight to San Jose in Costa Rica, we made our way to Nicaragua. There we visited Ometepe, the largest volcanic island in a freshwater lake. In addition to the two volcanoes, there is the beautiful San Ramon waterfall, howler and capuchin monkeys, and many birds to see.
To make our modest Spanish language skills travel-ready, we completed a one-week intensive course in Playa Gigante. We were able to combine this with surfing and relaxing in hammocks.
The next stop was Granada, a small, colorful colonial town next to the Mombacho volcano, which we also climbed. Then we continued to Laguna de Apoyo, a crater lake surrounded by a beautiful forest. There we went diving, among other things. Even though the visibility was not the best, it is interesting to feel hot water rising from the ground underwater.
The final stop in Nicaragua was Somoto, with the Somoto Canyon. On a 5-hour tour, we hiked/swam through the canyon and could jump into the cool water from the rocks.
