So I find myself at the airport with my world in a bag by my side...it's finally happening. Everything I have left now fits in my backpack! I've been working towards this day for so long and now I can embark on my biggest adventure yet!
First stop HongKong...on the plane, with a queasy stomach and the constant feeling of needing to vomit, I managed to get a mild food poisoning on my last night in Germany! Doesn't matter, the excitement is so great that I can easily handle it. The pilot announces a flight time of 11 hours...close my eyes, put on my headphones, and soon I'll be in Asia!
Arrived in HongKong, my former roommate Kary from Utrecht is already waiting for me at the airport. It's crazy how this world works, you just fly from Germany to the distant HongKong and you're already expected there!
With an empty stomach, legs half dead from sitting for so long, and the backpack heavy...now Andy and Hans, also former roommates from Utrecht, have joined as well. Breakfast time!!! Off to a traditional tea house on HongKong Island for the famous Dim Sum...
Afterwards, off to the hostel and first a round of sleep, in the afternoon Paul arrived as well and we ended the evening together with Kary and a few beers.
There's so much to see in HongKong, the city is huge, loud, bright, and smells of all sorts of things. But the smell of good, fresh food sneaks its way into this big city jungle time and time again. British colonialists have left clear traces on HongKong Island, and fortunately, these magnificent buildings did not have to yield to any skyscrapers. But no one can deny that HongKong has grown incredibly fast! This modernity that gives you a stiff neck and this old, traditional HongKong blend very pleasantly and create a vibrant world city on the doorstep of China.
Every evening we sat by the harbor of Kowloon and just looked at the skyline...like little kids marveling at an arriving train, we sit there not knowing where to look. Can it get any more impressive? I don't know, but I will see and discover much more on my journey. HongKong, the beer, the friends, and the feeling of finally being on the road have created a desire for more and I am ready for the big wide world!
