#30: Traveling where the pepper grows

La daabacay: 15.02.2020

14.02.2020

Today we are already leaving the hustle and bustle of Cambodia's capital behind and taking a bus to Kampot, about 60 km before the southern border to Vietnam. Our bus seems to be a bit older compared to the previous ones, but it does its job. To our surprise, the bus attendants on board check if the passengers are wearing seat belts. Interestingly, it does not seem to be a problem that there is no seat available for one passenger, and he takes the trip on a folding chair in the aisle. The seat belt requirement probably only applies to seats that have a belt. The approximately four-hour journey passes quickly and we arrive at our destination around 12 noon.

Immediately, we notice the very relaxed atmosphere in the small town. The traffic is manageable (you can cross the street in less than two minutes) and there are no crowds of people. On the way to our hostel, we stroll along the promenade and enjoy the view of the mountains and the gentle splashing of the river. With the colorful houses, the architectural style, and the flowers and palm trees, we feel a little bit of a 'Caribbean feeling'. The town is known for its Kampot pepper and the durian (a stinky fruit, prohibited in all accommodations) that are grown here. Therefore, it is only understandable to honor the durians with a huge statue in the city center.

When we arrive at the hostel, we are greeted friendly and can check in immediately. The hostel gives a simple but cozy and neat impression. The only thing that bothers us are the mini ants that are abundant in almost all accommodations.

As the first action in the room, we activate the refrigerator and air conditioning. Here in the south, it seems to be even hotter than at our previous stops. After a cooling off break, we go out to explore the city. Kampot is by far the most relaxed place we have visited so far. After the complete opposite in Phnom Penh, this is very pleasant and we immediately feel comfortable. Especially the old colonial buildings of the French and Chinese make the place so impressive.

During our tour, we also look for a nice restaurant where we can have dinner. Tired and cooked by the sun, we go to bed early.
