German cuisine

La daabacay: 20.08.2017

Hello everyone. It has been some time and I have experienced some nice things in the last few days. On Thursday, I had a premiere. Not only did I cook for my host family for the first time, but I also tried out my grandma's recipe for beef soup for the first time. The reason for this was that one of the kids here had a stomach bug, and I remember those times very well and how much grandma's soup helped. I had to modify the recipe a bit because my host mom and one of the kids only eat 'paleo' (also called the Stone Age diet), which doesn't allow the addition of a broth cube. So I had to improvise and use fresh vegetables, which didn't really affect the taste. Making egg custard was also a first for me. For the first time, I didn't use regular milk, but instead used coconut milk. Since I couldn't find any recipes with coconut milk, it was a gamble whether the egg custard would turn out right. Fortunately, that was not a problem and the egg custard turned out well. However, the appearance reminded me more of Swiss cheese :)

On Friday, I tried to prove my baking skills. The bread you can buy here is like toast. It's good, but after a short time, you start to miss German bread in some way. So I tried making bread for the second time (the first attempt failed because of the gluten-free flour). This time, the bread turned out well and my family was impressed (the part that can eat it). However, the bread was toasted again.
