First day at sea

After sleeping very well in my 4-bed cabin (surprisingly, the boat is only occupied up to 50%, probably too expensive for many), the first day at sea started very relaxed. It had rained during the night, but the weather cleared up in the morning.

After breakfast (on ships, there is always a lot of focus on food somehow, but I thought the food was great, including the obligatory spaghetti, but no ice cream!), I met Marc, an older American who has been traveling from Georgia to Tierra del Fuego for 4 months with a 250cc Honda and only 22 kilos of luggage (!). He told me exciting stories from his tour so far, in which he has experienced a lot. Among other things, he wanted to pay a fine of 300 EUR when leaving Honduras because his visa had expired, a mistyping that he overlooked when entering the country. His story about how he tricked the Honduran customs officer by giving him a multitool worth $50 instead of the demanded $300 made me smile in the morning.

I was also fascinated by a satellite phone he had with him, which he can use to send SMS to any phone number in the world from anywhere and which has an SOS button. When he presses it, a signal with his location is sent to a central location, which sends out a search party.

If I ever go on a world trip, I will definitely take such a thing with me ...
