Site Manager

La daabacay: 11.01.2019

I am now the Site Manager of Saraswati! So, in addition to the regular construction activities, I'm helping Grant (from New Zealand) and Ravi (from Nepal), the Project Coordinators, to ensure that we leave for the construction site on time in the morning, to check that everyone is wearing their safety equipment and that there are enough tools available and all the tools are in good condition. So mainly safety, order and organization. It's pretty cool and I'm really happy to have been asked! I just have to get used to being the first point of contact now when it comes to where the rubber mallet is, how to use the angle grinder, which drill attachment is needed for which screw... and yes, I know. I had to google all the German terms just now.

By the way, the pouring of the intermediate ceiling on Tuesday was successful. We started promptly at half past six and finished at 3 p.m. Right on schedule. But everything went perfectly as well. I was in the wheelbarrow team and probably went back and forth over seventy times, but it didn't get boring.

Afterwards, we celebrated and the next day was off. The village sacrificed two goats for us because of this special and successful major event, which we then had for lunch the next day. Good thing I'm a vegetarian.

Otherwise, we spent an evening singing and dancing around the fire with our Nepalese workers and had our weekly English class with them. It's fun not only to learn English, but also on the construction site. And sometimes it's heartwarming to hear the stories they tell.

Today, we also painted and played with the school children after work. Every day we're doing something different... something beautiful, meaningful, challenging and incredibly valuable.
