Galway - Aran Islands

Objavljeno: 17.01.2023

'The landscape stretched before me like paradise - a view like no other'

Along the coast next to Galway, there is a small group of islands - the Aran Islands that Serena and I visited on this day. Or rather, the largest of the three islands, Inis Mor. The boat we took was still fairly new and with wonderful weather, we were looking forward to a great journey. The journey was fine, except for the fact that I became acquainted with seasickness. Going below deck when the boat is not too big gave me an immediate bad feeling, which persisted throughout the entire journey and echoed for a while on land.

Once we arrived on the island, we decided to take one of the horse-drawn carriages - the best way to get around the island (the island is quite large to walk and the paths are too small for cars!). It was a great experience! I already like carriages, but the two horses were beautiful, the driver was a nice local and the dog was really cute. So, we let ourselves be driven around the area (literally, hehe) and enjoyed the view while listening to the stories of the driver. Inis Mor felt like a little paradise - gentle green hills with low stone walls stretching everywhere, deep blue sea as far as the eye can see, and weather that gave us sunburn (sunburn in Ireland!!)

A literal highlight were the ruins of the old fort, which could be climbed to the highest point. The ascent was strenuous and not particularly well-built, but it was really worth it. We sat at the edge of the cliffs and had a breathtaking view with the sea below us and the wind in our hair without any safety measures or railings. I felt like you could just let yourself fall and learn to fly. There weren't many people up there either, and the silence fit the peaceful and free atmosphere. I think up there I experienced one of the most beautiful spots on earth...

The carriage brought us back to the boat, and the boat brought us very close to the famous Cliffs of Moher, but from the water side and from below - a completely different perspective! Normally you only see the cliffs from above, and despite the swaying and roaring waves breaking on the rocks as our captain tried to stay as close as possible, it was impressive.

We spent the evening comfortably in front of the TV with Irish comedies. Father Ted and Derry Girls are definitely worth a look!
