Day 90 End of Gibb River Road (part 5)

Opublikowany: 11.09.2022

Just off the Gibb River Road are two well worth to visit national parks offering with different views and sights some variety to the gorges of the last days:

First stop is Windjana Gorge National Park. It is a narrow entrance to the Gorge Walk and Trail through the stone before you reach the gorge. It is an easy, mostly in the shade walk on sand and almost no rocks on your way - exactly, very different to the other walks the last days. On the way you have stunning views on the gorge walls and can always have a look around in or nearby the water for freshis. There are so many around on or near the river beds you are not allowed to swim although the water is very clear, so you can even watch coloured fish swim around. The only downside of the walk are very aggressive fruit flies which bite you and leave huge burning marks, which last for quite some time.

The other national park is Tunnel Creek. This time it is no gorge or pool but a cave. Already in the beginning you need your flip-flops to wade through the (very cold) water into the cave. At the start you have really nice views on the cave as there is an opening in the cave through which the sun light enters the cave. You can walk a bit further on, partly over stones and through ankle-deep water, where the cave is darker, so you cannot see too much. The way goes on, if you want to almost swim through the deep water to the next sand banks, but with freshis in the water, no water-proof light and the very cold water we weren't keen to move on to just maybe see some bats, so rather enjoyed the view & cool temperatures at the beginning of the cave. Back at the car park, temperatures have risen to the daily normal temperatures in the sun, but felt after this cool walk in the cave even hotter than the other days.

Making our way back we stopped at a car park and Stuart discovered his favourite tree: a huge and very old Boab tree - it is so huge, you have to actually search for him to make sure he is back on board for the trip to Derby to finish of the Gibb River Road, which starts at Kununurra and ends at Derby.
