Study day
Today I continue my study trip in Kazimierz, where it started ten days ago. This completes the circle. Somehow it makes sense because tomorrow is already the last day.
After breakfast at my favorite place, Café Hevre..
..I'm going to explore the High Synagogue, or rather the bookstore below:
This bookstore is known as one of the addresses for Jewish music..
..and literature.
The synagogue is located on the 1st floor, hence the name:
Stara Synagogue
But I'm heading to the Old Synagogue. It's exactly the opposite there. It is located in the basement, so to speak, it has been lowered..
..because building higher than the tallest Christian church tower was not allowed. This topic somehow sounds familiar to me. But once inside the synagogue, you don't notice anything.
History lesson
Now I'm into the topic and I'm going to the Galicia Jewish Museum:
This museum documents the traces of Jews in Polish Galicia. You have to understand this first.
Where is Galicia located?
From the perspective of today's Poland, it is exactly here (thin line):
Galicia is divided. One part is in Poland, another part is in Ukraine.
Has it always been like this?
No. Before the first partition of Poland in 1772, the whole of Galicia belonged to Poland:
After two more partitions or divisions, Poland disappeared from the map for a long time:
Galicia belonged to Austria.
Poland was resurrected with the Treaty of Versailles in 1918, and Galicia was added as well:
After 1945, Poland was shifted westward, but Galicia was not. So the division was created:
I have to admit that I only now realize that I have been in Galicia for 10 days..
..but it's better late than never.
Now I'm well prepared for the exhibition. It is based solely on the pictures taken by the photographer Chris Schwarz, who traveled through Polish Galicia for 12 years.
Sól Ziemi
And fittingly, there is the documentary film 'The Salt of the Earth' about the exceptional photographer Sebastião Salgado, here at 6 p.m. A film by Wim Wenders from 2014.
A film about photography. An interesting meta level. With a mix of English, French, and of course Polish.
And so I can also participate in a local cultural event here at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow. Something very special for me.
Truckarnia
Now I'm ready for the Truckarnia..
Enjoy your meal.
Poland, world champion
Poland is in volleyball fever. Wherever it flickers, crowds gather in front of the windows..
The goal is to defend the World Championship title. But it looks good. Today 3:0 against Serbia. Tomorrow it continues against Italy. Germany is already out. I know who I'm rooting for..
