06.08. Tidal island of Mandø

Lofalitsidwa: 06.08.2022

Last night, luckily after making a reservation, we found our camping spot (otherwise the campground was full and the reception was closed). We quickly ate hot dogs and after some complicated bed building, we found a peaceful sleep. Cold night - when we arrived, it was around 10 degrees, quite a change from the sauna the day before.

This morning, we start with unpacking and organizing, surprisingly we manage to fit everything quite well. Felix and Sammy's bicycles need to go in the trunk since the camper has a bike rack but only for three bikes.

Then it's already noon and we start rushing because we want to be at the Mandø crossing on time, while the tide is still low.

Mandø is located in western Jutland in the North Sea and is Denmark's only tidal island. The approximately 5km crossing on the causeway must be carefully planned according to the tidal table, otherwise, in the worst case scenario, the camper becomes a houseboat. We prefer to avoid that. We plan carefully (yay, low tide indeed) and arrive at the Mandø campground around 2 PM with dry feet.

We can choose our own camping spot and for the first time, we sit in front of our accommodation in the sun, enjoying better weather. We unpack our bikes (quickly installing the child seat for Sammy) and take a ride around the small but lovely island with a great view of the Wadden Sea. The island is surrounded by a dike and Samuel and Felix enjoy sliding down the dam on their bottoms (fresh straw slides great - but also pricks in the pants!)

On our way back, Flo gets into a conversation with our neighbor from northern Germany (reveals himself as a Vienna fan, apparently the best campground is in Kloburg), as a result, we unfortunately miss the opening time of the island's only market. Oh well, more hot dogs it is...
