11/11/2017 - Next Stop: Devonport

E phatlaladitšwe: 14.11.2017

Once again, we were drawn to the sea. To get to the city center of Auckland, we took a longer route today. Instead of the regional train that takes us to the city center within a few minutes, we took the bus. The travel time was three times longer, but it was worth it. Because the route mostly runs along the coast. :)

When we reached the city center, we went straight to the ferry terminal. Quickly booked two tickets for Devonport and after a short wait, the Fullers ferry set sail.
Devonport is part of the northern part of Auckland. As you may have noticed, the city feels endless - it stretches over more than 60km.
The ferries are an integral part of public transport. They operate within the ports every half an hour. Devonport is diagonally opposite the city center and can be reached in 15 minutes. The small district offers a beautiful view of the Auckland skyline and is therefore a popular tourist destination.

After the ferry docked, we strolled along the coast. The town has a maritime museum, which can be visited free of charge. The exhibition tells the story of the creation of the New Zealand Navy and its missions. It also covers past military operations and the importance of cohesion with the Maoris for the country. All in all, a truly interesting exhibition that we can recommend.
As we can't get enough of these volcanoes, it was a matter of course for us to also explore Mount Victoria. Already during the ascent, you could enjoy the wonderful view of Auckland City. After a sports stopover, we continued to the actual summit. Unlike the previous volcanoes, Mount Victoria does not have a deep crater. Over the years, the mountain has been used as an artillery position and defense system. Not without reason - the summit offers the best view of land and sea. From the peak of the mountain, we slowly made our way back home. Once we reached the ferry port, the waiting time for the return journey was only ten minutes.
Arriving in Auckland city center, we passed by some restaurants. Suddenly, we found ourselves in a square with various food trucks. The Belgian fries appealed to us the most - so we treated ourselves to two servings. We can assure you, it was amazing! Super delicious - just how Belgian fries should be. ;)
With full stomachs, we happily took the bus home.
