08.02.2023 from Geelong to Lorne and Great Otway NP
We slept in today, not sure why we were tired, maybe because of the idleness on the ferry. We say goodbye to Geelong, not without filling up the tank, diesel is 27 cents per liter cheaper here than on the island and we filled up with 100 liters today! Then I sent my husband shopping alone today, there was fresh coffee for me in the supermarket and free WIFI. We drive on the Great Ocean Road. We drove along here in 2001, but had little time, I remember cool temperatures. Today it is sunny, and I am wearing a short-sleeved t-shirt, no socks, no fleece jacket! I'm not cold!
But appearances can be deceiving, when the sun disappears behind thick clouds or, imagine that, sets, it can get cold.
So we are on the famous road, stopping at every point that is designated as worth seeing, and we are happy to have the time for it. In Bells Beach the Surf World Championships take place at Easter, today some surfers are practicing for it, it's exciting to watch how skillfully they sneak up on the waves and then stand on the board. I can't do that anymore. In Torquay we go into the sea, it's fresh, but the North Germans used to the Baltic Sea can handle it, even if only for 5 minutes. The surf is not so strong in Anglesea, there is a lighthouse in Aireys...
Much more interesting are the historical information along the route, ships have been stranded or wrecked off the coast here time and again, the stories of the people are not forgotten and are told. Finally, we arrive at the pre-booked and already paid for campsite in Otway NP. Why doesn't something like this exist with us, there are 6 campers and 6 tents here. A toilet ensures a mine-free zone. Everyone is peaceful and once everyone has paid, the state has made 200 AUD.
Today we feasted on barramundi fillets, a true delicacy.
