Yellowstone NP
11.09.2024
We wake up to heavy rain. At the Heart 6 Bar
we grab coffee and have breakfast with a view of the mountains.
Today we continue to Yellowstone National Park.
To do this, we have to drive through Teton NP again.
As the rain stops, we enjoy another coffee at Jackson Lake with a view of the Grand Teton.
I was here in 1991 as well, but I was camping ⛺️
Today we only see deer.
Next, we head to the South Entrance of Yellowstone NP.
On our way to the lodge is the
West Thumb Geyser Basin, where we stop for a moment. It's quite crowded for September.
There is a circular trail through the geysers.
Even in Yellowstone Lake
little geysers bubble.
There are mud pots, boiling springs, and geysers in all shades of blue and turquoise.
Next, we head to Old Faithful where our cabin is booked. We are still at an altitude of about 2,500 m. The cabin is small but nice, with 2 beds and a sink.
The showers and toilets are around the corner.
Tonight we go out 🤣 and dine at the diner. The wine comes from a can and in plastic cups.
And the sandwiches are decent... but definitely better than cheese sandwiches.
American coziness with raised chairs.
As the sun comes out again, we spend the evening on the lodge terrace and the Old FAITHFUL Geyser puts on a show.
Every 1.5 hours you can admire the spectacle.

The night was really great. First, a really extreme thunderstorm passes over us and then at 10 PM the alarm system of our car goes off (probably a bear wanted to spend the night in it). Jürgen suspects it has to do with the thunderstorm. To make matters worse, at 3 AM a deafening KATWARN test warning for Germany. No neighbor wishes for that.
And if you need to go to the toilet at night, there's a risk of being eaten by bears.
Unfortunately, it is raining again today, so we set off in the car to explore Yellowstone. It's just above freezing, so it's much more comfortable in the car. There’s a lot of activity at the viewpoints, so you can sometimes find no parking. When you see several cars parked on the roadside, you can assume that there are animals nearby. Today we see a wolf pack with black and white wolves.
We go through Madison and Norris to Canyon Village, where we find a supermarket again. Toast bread starts at $9☹️ unbelievable the prices here.
In the Canyon area, there is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone Park with 2 waterfalls.
The sun even comes out briefly. (But only for the photo)
We continue over Lake Village and back along Yellowstone Lake. Since we have a craving for non-American food today, we cook pasta with pesto during a break in the rain.
The gas stove has already paid off. Apart from the fact that it is freezing cold and Jürgen refuses to wear long pants, one can be glad while cooking outside not to be caught by bears.
But everything went well. Back in our cabin, we first turn on the oven and since it's pouring again, we stay inside.
