19 March 2023 from Emmdale to Gilgandra

How wrong we are with our assessment of the roadhouse in Emmdale. The trucks stop here, the drivers have a hearty breakfast, maybe even the drivers have lunch and definitely dinner, because the trucks drive all day and all night. We can see the kill rate from the animal carcasses on the road in the early morning.

But first, in 2001, 2002, 2018 we have been to Australia, we have never seen so few kangaroos as this year.

The route through Outback NSW is relatively boring. The first interesting place is Cobar with mining tradition. From a lookout, we see an open gold mine that has been driven deep into the mountain. In addition to gold, silver, tin, and copper are also mined here. Information boards explain where digging used to take place, where mining is happening today, and where the region is heading. One exciting number is that ore is produced in 1 to 2 days, which yields 15 kg of pure gold. We are also impressed by the depth of the mine shaft, the miners go in 1,450 meters deep.

We continue into a landscape that is partially characterized by field farming, often by grazing, and suddenly by irrigated cotton cultivation. We have arrived in the wetlands of the Macquarie River. Here, in the wetland, people rave about intact nature with water birds, reptiles, and praise sheep farming. The small towns are clean, the houses worth seeing, and the supply centers prosperous. But our destination is Gilgranda, a town with an agricultural focus, prosperous, and equipped with an excellent campground. Neat, clean, and tidy. We are satisfied, go into the pool twice and cook in the camp kitchen. There's beef steak and fresh salad.

And Wi-Fi 😊
