March 18, 2023 from Broken Hill to Emmdale

Whakaputaina: 19.03.2023

March 18, 2023 from Broken Hill to Emmdale

We are not in a hurry again, our first destination is a few kilometers outside Broken Hill, the historic town of Silverton, an abandoned silver mine with a town, famous for its filming for Mad Max, those who know it will know and others unknown movies to me. The Silverton Hotel is a trendy address; the lady at the gas station in BH (Broken Hill) raved about the well-chilled beer served there. And indeed, the hotel displays pictures of the filming on the set, great quotes about men and women hanging from the ceiling, and the beer, it tastes good.

We take a walk, but we're not interested in the peculiar art of some quirky artists. Unfortunately, we can't do anything with the Mad Max Museum, so we skip it and instead drive to the Look Out, which promises to provide a spectacular view of the vastness of the Outback. Promise kept, the view is spectacular.

Now we drive back to Broken Hill and continue towards the coast and Brisbane. Unfortunately, there is not much to see, wide plains with grass, with low bushes, with eucalyptus trees, depending on whether there is occasional water or not. The grazing areas are fenced, but we rarely see grazing cattle, usually 2 or 3 goats directly by the roadside. The town of Wilcannia appears large, but it is actually a roadside village with a gas station, hotel, and sports field, not a place for sightseeing.

However, the Darling River, one of the most important rivers in the country, flows immediately on the edge of the village. The river carries water all year round and has a wide floodplain here. We drive over 4 bridges, all the tributaries of the Darling River also carry water, albeit less and less. There is water in the flood meadows, and water birds flock here. There are markers in the meadows indicating the water level. It must be amazing here when a lot of water flows down the Darling River.

Finally, we reach our destination for today, a tiny place, a small roadhouse, gas station, and accommodation. The cabin is for sale, but who wants to take it over, most vehicles just drive past here. But we are staying here tonight, for 10 AUD.
