Preparations are in full swing

Whakaputaina: 01.08.2021

How much we would love to have already packed the camper and be on our way...
Every day we realize how much we both need this break and look forward to it.
However, we still have to be patient a little longer, and there are still some preparations to be made.

Yesterday we sat together with a large ice cream sundae and made a to-do list of everything that still needs to be done, organized, and packed.

Since we have been trying to live more environmentally friendly for some time now, we don't buy travel-sized cleaning products and toiletries from any drugstores.

We asked ourselves, why should we buy something new just because it comes in a smaller and more convenient format when we already have it at home anyway?
Dish soap, laundry detergent, shampoo, shower gel, and so on are all things we use daily at home and can not only be easily refilled but even made ourselves.

Instead of ready-made travel laundry detergent in a tube, we simply take a piece of lye soap and washing soda with us.
Dish soap is quickly made from lye soap, which you simply grate and dissolve in hot water. Put it in a pump soap dispenser and you're done.
We have been making solid shampoo ourselves for some time now, so we simply pack a piece of it, just like with the body soap.

Baking soda and vinegar are coming with us anyway, because besides lye soap and soda, they are versatile.
Whether it's for washing fruits and vegetables, making a hair rinse, or removing odors.

Certainly, there will be some things where we cannot do without plastic, either because alternatives will be too expensive or because there are no plastic-free alternatives available in the first place.

That's why we try to avoid it in areas where it is possible for us and to protect this planet through other means.

Which brings us to our next point. Wild camping has its appeal, and you always come across a spot on earth that you wouldn't see with a night stay at a campsite.
By booking a pitch at a campsite, you not only protect nature but also support the local tourism industry. That is also a sustainability issue, isn't it?
Certainly, there are some other points that speak for it, but they would go beyond the scope here and now.

If you do spend the occasional night "freely", always leave the place cleaner than you found it.

We will now push ahead with the preparations and wish you a lovely Sunday.

Yours, Nina and Theresa
