Lady Elliot Island

MIVOAKA: 18.03.2020

Monday, 16th March 2020: Today we are flying to Lady Elliot Island from Bundaberg in a small propeller plane with 13 seats. We arrive very early at the small regional airport in Bundaberg. The pilot himself picks us up at check-in and takes us to the airstrip, he gives us the safety briefing and stows our backpacks. Then we're off. The flight takes about 30 minutes. Lady Elliot Island is a coral island and is part of the southern Great Barrier Reef. It is located about 80 km northeast of Bundaberg and is on the list of Australia's World Heritage Great Barrier Reef. The visibility was amazing. Before landing, the pilot flew around the island and then landed on a quite bumpy grass runway. After the welcome and a detailed description of the island and the leisure activities offered by a resort employee, we chose our snorkeling equipment and reef shoes. You have to wear reef shoes here because the beach is covered with sharp-edged corals, it is also advisable to wear these shoes in the water as there are only a few sandy spots. Then we checked into our eco-hut. In the afternoon, we snorkeled in the lagoon offshore and walked around the island. Fish feeding and a lecture about the turtles that lay eggs and hatch here. Not to forget the sunset with a glass of wine and beer. All in all, a super eventful day.

Tuesday, 17th March 2020: Very early in the morning, we went to the beach to photograph the sunrise, unfortunately there are clouds in the sky, but the light is still great. Our return flight is not until 4:00 pm. Since it is low tide, we went on a reef walk in the lagoon. The glass bottom boat tour also takes place this morning. Due to the high waves, the boat rocks quite a bit. After a visit to the corals through the glass bottom, we go snorkeling in the sea again. Then showers, lunch, and a short walk on this unique island. Now it is already time for the return flight. We land at 4:30 pm with lots of impressions, experiences, and unique photos in Bundaberg.
